Michael van Gerwen determined to defend Grand Slam of Darts title

Michael van Gerwen admits that he is eager to successfully defend his Grand Slam of Darts title after winning the trophy for the first time 12 months ago.

Michael van Gerwen has said that he will try to focus on one game at a time as he bids to retain his Grand Slam of Darts title.

The world number one has been in sparkling form over the past six weeks, with the Dutchman winning the World Grand Prix, European Championship and World Series of Darts.

He is the clear favourite to win the cross-code event in Wolverhampton but he has insisted that he will only concentrate on the matches in front of him, starting with Martin Adams on Saturday night.

The 27-year-old told PDC TV: "It was a big moment for me to win last year because it was the only big tournament I hadn't won at that time. The only success for me next week is keeping hold of my title.

"I'm looking forward to the tournament and there will be some interesting matches but I always know now that if I play my best game then I have a very big chance to win it.

"I'm focused and I'm feeling confident, and I know I'm playing well but I'll just make sure I focus on each match and that means preparing for Martin Adams first because he's a great player."

Van Gerwen will also face Max Hopp and Brendan Dolan in Group A as he bids to reach the last 16 at the Civic Hall.
