The match was evenly poised at 3-3 before the 15-time world champion went on to seal the victory with an 107 checkout.
Adrian Lewis recorded an 109.39 average as he recorded a comprehensive 5-1 win over Co Stompe to qualify for the second round.
Stompe will now play Martin Phillips to decide who joins Lewis, after the Welshman defeated Vincent van der Voort 5-2.
Paul Nicholson edged out Wes Newton 5-4 in a match that produced eight 180s, while Mark Webster was dominant in a 5-1 win over John Part.
In the night's other matches, Mervyn King beat James Hubbard 5-3, Jan Dekker defeated Aaron Monk 5-1, and Magnus Caris recorded a 5-1 victory over Barrie Bates.
