James Wade beats Robert Thornton in a five-set epic at the World Grand Prix in Dublin in a match which saw both players hit nine-dart legs.

James Wade and Robert Thornton have become just the second and third players to hit nine-dart legs at the World Grand Prix in Dublin.

In what will go down as the most remarkable match in the double-start tournament's 16-year history, Wade produced the perfect game in the first leg of the second set before opponent Thornton repeated the feat in the fourth as the match went to a decider.

It was left-hander Wade who prevailed to book his place in the quarter-finals, but the match will be remembered for the two players entering the history books after Brendan Dolan had become the first man to achieve a double-start nine-dart leg in 2011.

Earlier on in the evening, Kevin Painter produced a stunning comeback from 2-0 down to beat Adrian Lewis in a deciding leg to progress through to the last eight.

Defending champion Phil Taylor also reached the next stage after overturning a 1-0 deficit to defeat Grand Prix debutant Andrew Gilding by a 3-1 scoreline.

In the final contest of the evening, Gary Anderson overcame a shaky start to register a 3-1 triumph over Michael Mansell.
