Peter Wright progressed into the final of the PDC World Darts Championships for the first time in his career this evening, beating Simon Whitlock 6-2 at Alexandra Palace.

Wright began with a 180 and went on to take the opening leg against the throw with a confident 13-dart finish. He held on to his own throw in the next two games to clinch the opening set 3-1.

Whitlock missed chances in both of the opening two legs in the next set, allowing Wright to win it 3-2 and take a 2-0 lead in the best of 11 match.

Wright broke Whitlock twice in the third set to win it 3-1 before 'The Wizard' finally got a set on the board, winning the fourth 3-1 to raise hopes of a comeback.

Those hopes were soon quashed, however, as Wright produced two 13-dart finishes to take the next set 3-0 despite two 180s by Whitlock, giving him a 5-1 lead overall.

Whitlock did manage to win a second set as he overcame an early error to beat Wright 3-2, but it was merely delaying the inevitable as Wright secured the victory in the next set.

The Scotsman will face either Michael van Gerwen on Adrian Lewis in the final on Wednesday.
