The BBC has confirmed that Huw Edwards has resigned from the broadcaster, nine months after his suspension as lead news anchor.
The 62-year-old was suspended last July after it emerged that he had paid £35,000 to a teenager for a series of explicit pictures.
A subsequent police investigation found no evidence of any criminal wrongdoing, while in the wake of the allegations Edwards was admitted to hospital with depression.
A BBC spokesperson said: "Huw Edwards has today resigned and left the BBC. After 40 years of service, Huw has explained that his decision was made on the basis of medical advice from his doctors.
"The BBC has accepted his resignation which it believes will allow all parties to move forward. We don't believe it appropriate to comment further."
Edwards had presented the 10pm news bulletin for the BBC since 2023 and was also the lead anchor for events such as the death and funeral of Queen Elizabeth II in 2022.
The BBC will now look to find a new main host for coverage of the impending general election, which is expected to take place later this year. body check tags ::
