Bookies' favourite Loreen has won the Eurovision Song Contest for Sweden in Liverpool, handing the country a seventh victory in the competition.

The triumph equals Ireland's record of seven wins and also marks the second win for Loreen, who previously stormed to the title in 2012 with 'Euphoria'.

Her new song 'Tattoo' had been the long-time favourite for the crown but faced a late charge from neighbour Finland with 'Cha Cha Cha' by Kaarija, which won the public vote with 376 points for an overall total of 526.

The United Kingdom - hosting on behalf of 2022 winners Ukraine due to the Russian war - had a disastrous night, finishing one from last with 'I Wrote A Song' by Mae Muller.

Eurovision overlord Martin Osterdahl said: "We were determined that this year's Contest would honour Ukraine's 2022 victory and the close collaboration between the BBC and UA:PBC ensured Ukrainian culture was front and centre of the 2023 event. We are incredibly grateful to these broadcasters for their incredible work and commitment to creating a a truly historic event.

"We congratulate Loreen and the Swedish delegation on their win and a superb performance of 'Tattoo' that will go down in Eurovision history! Every artist made sure Europe was truly United by Music.

"We had the warmest welcome we could have hoped for from the city of Liverpool. Everyone who came here to work on or enjoy this year's contest will take away the most incredible memories."
