Sir Elton John's potentially-final ever UK gig was a huge ratings hit for BBC One last night, according to early ratings figures.

The legendary musician played for the first ever time at the Glastonbury Festival, headlining the Pyramid stage on Sunday night, and the BBC aired the two-hour set in full live from 9pm.

Overall, a huge average of 7.27 million viewers - a 48.9% share of the TV audience - tuned in, marking the largest ever overnight TV audience for a Glastonbury performance in history. A peak audience of 7.67 million came at 10.08pm.

"Elton John's set will undoubtedly go down in history as one of the most epic performances ever to light up the Pyramid Stage and was watched by a record 7.6 million people on BBC One," said the BBC's music director Lorna Clarke.

"I'm so delighted the BBC and our superb teams were able to share every bit of the magic from Worthy Farm during the weekend with audiences at home."

Overall across the festival, the BBC reported that the linear audience was up 7% year-on-year, with a record 21.6 million people tuning in at some point over the weekend.
