Love Island producers are reportedly introducing extra psychological screening and mental health support for this year's series.

Last year the show was cancelled due to coronavirus but ITV2 is full steam ahead with planning for its comeback this summer and is said to be considering a number of alternative UK locations if travel to Spain is impractical at the time.

Over the last few years the dating show has been hit with the tragic loss of former contestants Sophie Gradon and Mike Thalassitis, as well as long-time host Caroline Flack, to suicide, and now The Sun reports that producers are bringing in additional support measures for the new crop of contestants.

The newspaper says that prospective islanders will undergo three different rounds of assessment and be required to provide GP and medication details before being considered for the final lineup.

Earlier this month former contestant Doctor Alex George was appointed by prime minister Boris Johnson as the government's new youth mental health ambassador in an effort to improve support for a growing number of young people struggling with mental health issues.
