Avatar: The Way of Water becomes the third highest-grossing film of all time, displacing Titanic in the list.

Avatar: The Way of Water has surpassed Titanic in box office receipts to become the third highest-grossing movie of all time.

The epic sequel - from James Cameron, who also masterminded the 1997 disaster movie - has now generated $2.244 billion (£1.86 billion) globally in just two months since its release.

The figure edges the movie ahead of the $2.236 billion brought in by Titanic, which has just gone on re-release and is still adding to its lifetime total.

Cameron's first Avatar movie remains the highest-grossing film of all time with box office receipts of $2.923 billion (£2.43 billion), while in second place is Avengers: Endgame with $2.798 billion (£2.33 billion).

A third Avatar movie has already been filmed for release in December 2024, while fourth and fifth films are due out in 2026 and 2028 respectively.
