Ray Liotta, known for films such as Goodfellas, dies in his sleep at the age of 67.

Ray Liotta - best known for his role in the iconic Goodfellas - has died at the age of 67, his publicist has announced.

The actor, who played mobster Henry Hill in Martin Scorcese's 1990 masterpiece, was not thought to be suffering from any prior illnesses and died in his sleep on Thursday.

At the time of his death Liotta was in the Dominican Republic, where he was filming a new movie called Dangerous Waters.

"I am utterly shattered to hear this terrible news about my Ray," his Goodfellas co-star Lorraine Bracco tweeted. "I can be anywhere in the world & people will come up & tell me their favorite movie is Goodfellas.

"Then they always ask what was the best part of making that movie. My response has always been the same...Ray Liotta."

In a statement, Robert De Niro said: "I was very saddened to learn of Ray's passing. He is way too young to have left us."

Liotta is survived by fiancée Jacy Nittolo and daughter Karsen.
