Harry Potter actor Sir Michael Gambon has died in hospital at the age of 82.

The star - Dumbledore in the hugely-popular movie franchise - had been suffering from pneumonia.

A statement from his wife, Lady Gambon, and their son Fergus Gambon said: "We are devastated to announce the loss of Sir Michael Gambon.

"Beloved husband and father, Michael died peacefully in hospital with his wife Anne and son Fergus at his bedside, following a bout of pneumonia."

A three-time Olivier winner, Gambon had been in the industry for more than 60 years and was also known for The Singing Detective, Maigret and Fantastic Mr Fox. body check tags ::
