Avatar producer Jon Landau reveals that a potential fifth film in the franchise will be partly set on Earth.

Avatar producer Jon Landau has revealed that a potential fifth film in the franchise will be partly set on Earth in the mid-22nd century.

This week marks the release of the long-awaited sequel to the 2009 blockbuster - known as Avatar: The Way of Water - and a third film has already been made for release at Christmas 2024.

Two more films are in development, although they are still awaiting the official go-ahead from the studio, who will axe the project in the unlikely event that The Way of Water flops at the box office.

Speaking to Gizmodo about the franchise's future, Landau said: "Well, it's funny. I wasn't going to talk about it, but I've now subsequently heard that [James Cameron] has talked about it a little bit.

"In [Avatar 5] there is a section of the story where we go to Earth. And we go to it to open people's eyes, open Neytiri's eyes, to what exists on Earth."

He continued: "Just like you're defined by the choices you make in life, not all humans are bad. Not all Na'vi are good. And that's the case here on Earth. And we want to expose Neytiri to that."

Avatar: The Way of Water is released worldwide on Friday.
