Batwoman names its new lead for season two

Javicia Leslie is unveiled as the new lead on Batwoman, becoming the first black actress to take on the iconic role.

Javicia Leslie has been cast as the new lead in Batwoman for its upcoming second season.

The show is introducing a new character in the titular role after actress Ruby Rose announced her shock departure earlier this year, having allegedly struggled to cope with the long filming hours during the first season.

Producers subsequently confirmed that rather doing a straight recast, they would introduce a new character to take over the 'Batwoman' mantle.

Leslie, 33 - known for the comedy drama God Friended Me - will play Ryan Wilder, described as "a girl who would steal milk for an alley cat and could also kill you with her bare hands".

In a statement, Leslie said of her casting: "I am extremely proud to be the first black actress to play the iconic role of Batwoman on television, and as a bisexual woman, I am honoured to join this groundbreaking show which has been such a trailblazer for the LGBTQ+ community."

Speaking on Instagram, Rose praised the choice for her replacement, writing: "This is amazing!! I am so glad Batwoman will be played by an amazing Black woman. I want to congratulate Javicia Leslie on taking over the bat cape. You are walking into an amazing cast and crew. I can't wait to watch season 2 you are going to be amazing!!"

Batwoman season two is due to premiere in January.
