New Batman universe show to be set in Gotham Police Department

HBO orders a new drama series from The Batman's Matt Reeves set in the Gotham police department.

Streaming service HBO Max has ordered a new TV drama series set in the Batman universe.

The iconic character is being rebooted by filmmaker Matt Reeves in new movie The Batman, which sees Robert Pattinson take over from Ben Affleck as the caped crusader.

Alongside Boardwalk Empire creator Terence Winter, Reeves will also mastermind the new series, which will be set in the Gotham police department and "extend the world established in the movie and further explore the myriad of compelling and complex characters of Gotham".

"This is an amazing opportunity, not only to expand the vision of the world I am creating in the film, but to explore it in the kind of depth and detail that only a longform format can afford," said Reeves of the project.

"Getting to work with the incredibly talented Terence Winter, who has written so insightfully and powerfully about worlds of crime and corruption, is an absolute dream."

The Batman is due for release in October 2021, with the new series likely to launch off the back of the film.
