Ricky Gervais wants pop stars to cover David Brent's back catalogue

Ricky Gervais reveals that he wants popstars to cover songs by David Brent to mark The Office's 20th anniversary in July.

Ricky Gervais has suggested that he is keen to mark the 20th anniversary of The Office by getting popstars to cover songs by his alter ego David Brent.

The mockumentary, which debuted on BBC Two on July 9, 2001, followed events at the Slough branch of the fictional Wernham Hogg paper company, run by cringeworthy office boss Brent.

Despite running for just 14 episodes, the show has become one of the most successful British comedies of all time and also inspired a US version with Steve Carell that remains one of the most popular shows in the world on streaming services.

During the series Brent revealed that he was also a musician and had a catalogue of original songs - later embarking on a full-blown tour of Berkshire in the 2016 follow-up movie David Brent: Life on the Road.

With the 20th anniversary approaching, Gervais posted on Twitter: "This year marks the 20th anniversary of David Brent hitting our screens. I was thinking of getting real pop stars to cover some of his songs. Who should do which songs? Have a think."

Songs in Brent's discography include 'Free Love Freeway', 'Life On The Road', 'Slough', 'Lady Gypsy' and 'Please Don't Make Fun of the Disableds'.
