'Spooks' creator calls for new series

Spooks creator David Wolstencroft says that there is a "very big argument" for resurrecting the spy drama.

Spooks creator David Wolstencroft has called on the BBC to resurrect the spy drama for a new series.

The show, following a group of spies working at MI-5, launched in 2002 and ran for 10 series before ending in 2011, with a one-off spinoff movie following in 2015.

Speaking to the Radio Times, Wolstencroft said that the show is ripe for a revival, although he would be keen to make any potential new series more diverse than the first incarnation.

"I would make a very big argument for bringing the show back, frankly, even with a new younger writing team," he told the publication.

"I think we would have a greater racial diversity in the cast. I would want more women writing it and directing it. It was quite a male-heavy show. It's just the way that everything fell at the time.

"The stories would come from different places, and maybe would be outside London. It would be more distributed across the nation."

The BBC has recently made all 10 series of the show available for streaming on iPlayer.
