Vicar of Dibley to return for one-off sketch

Dawn French will reprise her role as Geraldine Granger in a new one-off The Vicar of Dibley sketch.

Dawn French will reprise her role as Geraldine Granger for a new The Vicar of Dibley sketch, it has been confirmed.

The ecclesiastical comedy ran for two full series between 1994 and 1998 but has been revived multiple times since for Christmas specials and one-off sketches, the most recent of which aired in 2015 as part of Comic Relief.

The new skit will air as part of the BBC's The Big Night In event on Thursday night, which will also include a Little Britain sketch and the return of Catherine Tate's Lauren.

"I'm back in the dog collar, back in the vicarage, and back on your telly as part of The Big Night In," said French. "Be there, or go to hell. Literally. I have some sway."

Details of the sketch have yet to be revealed, including which - if any - members of the original cast will return. Emma Chambers (Alice), John Bluthal (Frank), Liz Smith (Letitia) and Roger Lloyd-Pack (Owen) have all passed away in the last few years.

The Big Night In airs on BBC One from 7pm this Thursday.
