A peak of almost 9.3 million people tuned in to see Leicester City win the FA Cup for the first time in their history last night, according to early figures.

The Foxes' maiden triumph - over eight-time winners Chelsea - was settled by a stunning thunderbolt goal from the club's record signing, Belgian midfielder Youri Tielemans, in the 63rd minute of the contest in front of 21,000 spectators at Wembley.

BBC One's coverage of the game began an hour before kickoff at 4.15pm and ran until 7.45pm, averaging an impressive 5.77m (42.5%) - easily the highest audience of the day on any channel.

The ratings figures peaked at 7.08pm as the game ended, with a mammoth 9.27m (53.2%) watching.

Coverage of the game was also shown on BT Sport 1, with an average of 246,000 (2%) between 3pm and 8pm and a peak of 437,000 at 6.44pm.

Ratings figures do not count viewers who watched the game at pubs or other non-household settings.
