Channel 4 orders a further two series of The Piano as well as a Christmas special.

Channel 4 has ordered a further two series of breakout hit The Piano, plus a Christmas special.

The show, which averaged 2.7 million viewers an episode when it aired earlier this year, featured amateur pianists performing in train stations around the country.

Claudia Winkleman was host, while Mika and Lang Lang waited secretly in the wings to surprise the best performers with a chance to take part in a unique concert at the Royal Albert Hall.

The second and third series will each run to seven episodes, up from the five of the first series, while the one-hour Christmas special will see some of the best series one contestants return to perform festive classics at King's Cross station in London.

"In a world full of wannabes seeking their moment in the limelight, The Piano was a breath of fresh air," said Channel 4's chief content officer Ian Katz.

"It celebrated ordinary people doing something extraordinary for the sheer love of it. From the 94-year-old widower who played in Glasgow station to find company to Lucy, the remarkable 13-year-old who stole the nation's hearts.

"It took viewers on a remarkable emotional rollercoaster and I'm delighted that it will be coming back from more British stations next year."

The broadcaster has also commissioned a 70-minute documentary about series one winner Lucy and her teacher Daniel.
