Netflix announces details of a Bridgerton prequel series featuring Queen Charlotte.

Netflix has announced details of a spinoff series of its breakout hit Bridgerton focussed on the character of Queen Charlotte.

The period drama - from prolific producer Shonda Rhimes - has become a global phenomenon since the release of its first season last Christmas, and Netflix has already commissioned three further seasons.

In an announcement on Friday, the streaming service confirmed that it has also given the go-ahead to a "limited series" explaining the backstory of Queen Charlotte, played by Golda Rosheuvel in the main show.

"Many viewers had never known the story of Queen Charlotte before Bridgerton brought her to the world, and I'm thrilled this new series will further expand her story and the world of Bridgerton," said Bela Bajaria, Netflix's head of global TV.

"Shonda and her team are thoughtfully building out the Bridgerton universe so they can keep delivering for the fans with the same quality and style they love.

"And by planning and prepping all the upcoming seasons now, we also hope to keep up a pace that will keep even the most insatiable viewers totally fulfilled."

The second season is currently being filmed ahead of an expected release later this year.
