Ukraine's Andriy Yagodka has admitted that he is overwhelmed by his gold medal success in the men's individual sabre at the European Games.
The 26-year-old defeated Romania's Tiberiu Dolniceanu 15-10 in the final of the event at Crystal Hall in Baku to seal his triumph.
Yagodka told reporters: "I hoped that I would win gold, but I did not really expect it. It is an amazing feeling. It was hard and I started to have doubts that I can beat him before the break. But then at the end he surrendered. I think I just had more strength left than he did.
"At the beginning we were checking each other out, we know each other. These are some fencing details. I have not yet fully realised what I've won. I think this will come a bit later.
"These are the first European Games, but they do not give us any rating. But the whole setting of the competition and the fact that they are the first make them it meaningful."
Ukraine have won six gold medals in Baku.
