Petr Cech: 'Arsenal win over Leicester City is significant'

Arsenal goalkeeper Petr Cech says that his side's 2-1 victory over Leicester City makes a "significant difference" to the Premier League title race.

Arsenal goalkeeper Petr Cech has said that his side's victory over Leicester City makes a "significant difference" to the Premier League title race.

The Foxes were on course to move eight points clear at the top of the table when Jamie Vardy fired them in front from the penalty spot, but a Danny Simpson red card and goals from Theo Walcott and Danny Welbeck saw the Gunners come from behind to cut the deficit to two points.

Welbeck's goal came in the 95th minute of the match, and Cech was pleased with how his side kept fighting for the win until the very end.

"We had to concentrate in the final stages because any counter-attack was becoming more and more dangerous as we searched for the winner. It was tricky," he told BBC Sport.

"What I like about our win is that it is always tricky when opponents are down to 10 men. They have good organisation and are fighting for their lives. We managed to break them down and create chances. We kept missing chances but kept composure and kept coming.

"We had so many half-chances where we could have scored more. If you have a cushion of five or eight points it is a big difference. We overturned eight points to two - it is significant difference."

Welbeck's goal came in his first appearance since April 2015 following almost a year out through injury, and Cech reserved special praise for the match-winner.

"It has been a great day for him because [of] working hard to come back. We could see last couple of weeks that he was ready and sharp and confident in training. He really deserved [it]," he added.

The win also saw Arsenal leapfrog North London rivals Tottenham Hotspur into second place in the Premier League table.
