Piers Morgan slams "shameful" Arsene Wenger

Television personality Piers Morgan hits out at Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger for his "shameful" reluctance to strengthen the Gunners.

Piers Morgan has blasted Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger for his "shameful" refusal to sign any outfield players during the summer transfer window.

Goalkeeper Petr Cech, who was signed from Chelsea for £10m, was the Gunners' only recruit during a window in which the French coach was rumoured to have up to £200m at his disposal.

The North Londoners were the only club in Europe's top five divisions not to sign an outfield player and Twitter was rife with furious Arsenal fans when Tuesday's 6pm deadline passed, with thousands using a 'WengerOut' hashtag.

"I cannot understand why Wenger would do this," lifelong Arsenal fan and television personality Morgan told talkSPORT.

"Why, when we have potentially a pretty good squad - and I don't dispute that at all we have some good players in this squad - when we are on the cusp of potentially challenging again, when you have £200m at your disposal, do you literally do nothing?

"I think it's a shameful abrogation of your duty as Arsenal manager. It is further indicative to me that Wenger is not the Wenger that he was a decade ago."

Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema and Paris Saint-Germain marksman Edinson Cavani were among those linked for much of the window.

Arsenal have won two, drawn one and lost one of their first four Premier League games this season, leaving them five points behind Manchester City.
