Gunners legend Peter Storey has said that Arsene Wenger "lost the plot" on transfer deadline day and made poor signings.
The former Arsenal defender, who made over 500 appearances for the club, insists that the likes of Per Mertesacker are not good enough and that the Frenchman must invest in his defence.
"Arsenal have had a bad start and it seems like Wenger has panicked," Storey told The Mirror. "He seems to have lost the plot. I mean, some of the people he's bought, they're not top quality, really.
"Mertesacker's a big fellow, but he doesn't look very mobile – he looks a bit slow. Obviously, he's played a lot for Germany, but if he really is top-class, why has no-one else come in for him?
"Arsene's had defensive problems for a couple of seasons. I don't think that defence really is his strong point. He's more interested in all this intricate passing. They need a specialist coach to organise the defence and play as a unit."
Mertesacker, 26, arrived at the Emirates on transfer deadline day for a reported £10m fee.
