Marco van Basten: logical for Robin van Persie to leave

Marco van Basten believes that it would be "logical" for Robin van Persie to leave Arsenal, unless there is significant squad investment.

Marco van Basten believes that it would be "logical" for Robin van Persie to leave Arsenal, unless the club invest a significant amount of money in the squad over the summer.

The 47-year-old Herenveen manager worked with the Premier League top-scorer during his time in charge of the Dutch national team between 2004 and 2008.

The former Ajax and AC Milan star is also 'in the know' regarding the inner workings of the Gunners, having worked closely with the club while gaining UEFA coaching badges.

"Arsenal have a few guys behind the scenes who really do want to spend big money on players," Van Basten told The Mirror.

"So far, the club have not wanted to give in to these guys. But there comes a point when a player like Robin can say if that remains the philosophy of the club, then he'll have to move on.

"There is a logical reason for Robin to leave if he wants to win trophies. But he can turn round to the board and the manager and say: 'Look, I enjoy life here at Arsenal. Why would I leave? But you have to make new signings.'"

Van Persie had been linked with a move to Manchester City, but Arsene Wenger is adamant that he will not sell any more of his players to the Citizens.
