Arsene Wenger says that he was right to take off Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain during his side's 0-0 with Aston Villa.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has defended his decision to take off Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain during his side's draw with Aston Villa.

The England international started the match in the place of the injured Theo Walcott, but failed recreate his best form for the club and was taken off in the second half during the 0-0 stalemate at Villa Park.

This led to Gunners fans chanting 'you don't know what you're doing' towards the dugout, but the Frenchman says that he made the right call by taking Oxlade-Chamberlain off.

"I have managed for 30 years, including 1,600 matches and 200 in the Champions League, so I must have been a bit lucky!" Wenger said.

"Alex has not played a lot recently and lacks a bit but he was dangerous in patches.

"He's a very talented boy who I believe will be a great player. But he's learning his job. He's 19 and there will be ups and downs, so you need patience."

Arsenal travel to Everton on Wednesday.
