Analysing Wolverhampton Wanderers' run-in

Sports Mole takes an in-depth look at the fixtures Wolverhampton Wanderers will have to play if the 2019-20 Premier League season resumes.

Given their hectic schedule throughout the season, you would have been forgiven for assuming that Wolverhampton Wanderers would be able to benefit most from having some time away from competitive action.

However, Nuno Espirito Santo and his players have relished the relentless amount of fixtures, and momentum has been lost due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Nevertheless, if the current campaign resumes later in 2020, Wolves are handily positioned in sixth, just five points adrift of fourth-placed Chelsea.

With qualification for the Champions League still a possibility, Sports Mole takes an in-depth look at the West Midlands outfit's remaining nine matches.

While the Premier League are yet to come up with a revised schedule, we can only assume that Wolves will play their away encounter at West Ham United upon their return to the top flight.

In normal circumstances, it would be a fixture which suits Nuno's side, who have only lost three of their 14 away games in the Premier League this season in comparison to the Hammers claiming just four triumphs at their own ground.

There would be a similar feeling regarding their next game on the travels at rivals Aston Villa, although their neighbours have defeated Wolves in Birmingham on the last two occasions.

Wolves' final three trips are scheduled for Bramall Lane, Turf Moor and Stamford Bridge respectively, games against Sheffield United, Burnley and Chelsea, who have all recorded seven victories from 15 home games.

However, in the reverse fixtures earlier this season, Wolves failed to prevail on any occasion, which included a heavy 5-2 defeat against Chelsea.

Like their away record, Wolves have recorded five wins and three defeats at Molineux, but Nuno will expect his players to see off a Bournemouth outfit who have suffered 11 defeats away from the Vitality Stadium.

Although Arsenal have just two wins to their name on their travels, registering as many as eight draws would make a stalemate the most likely outcome in the West Midlands.

The penultimate game is scheduled to be Everton, a team who have just three wins to their names from 15 visits elsewhere, but the Toffees did get the better of Wolves at Goodison Park earlier in the season.

Providing that they are able to maintain their solid form, Wolves could require a win against Crystal Palace to keep in contention for a European place, although they may find themselves up against a resilient Eagles outfit who have lost just five of their 14 away games.

The average league position of Wolves' final nine foes is 11.77, but facing six teams in the bottom half of the table could be perceived as a negative with many still scrapping for their Premier League futures.

There is an argument that Wolves' style of play is also better suited to playing higher quality teams, a theory which is backed up with just 13 points coming from the nine corresponding fixtures.
