Southampton manager Ronald Koeman is reportedly keen to sign Atletico Madrid defender Toby Alderweireld.
It has been reported in recent days that the Belgium international is hoping that he can depart the La Liga champions before next week's transfer deadline in order to secure regular starting action elsewhere.
That was thought to have alerted Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger, who is said to have wanted the 25-year-old on a loan basis.
Atletico would prefer a permanent transfer, though, which suits the Saints, according to the Daily Mail.
The report adds that Koeman's previous working relationship with Alderweireld from their time together at Ajax may help the deal to reach a conclusion.
