Aston Villa manager Tim Sherwood backs midfielder Ashley Westwood to develop into an important player for England in the future.

Aston Villa boss Tim Sherwood has backed midfielder Ashley Westwood to become a prominent feature in future England squads.

Westwood recently signed a new deal at Villa Park and his manager believes that the 25-year-old can provide his country with a replacement option for some of England's ageing midfielders.

"I'm delighted for him. I would be very surprised if he didn't play for England this season – he's as good as that," said Sherwood, according to the Daily Star.

"He's probably been the single most consistent player at this club since I've arrived. He's very much of the Michael Carrick mould. Michael's not getting any younger and I'm not sure we've found a replacement for him yet, so I think he's got every chance.

"We're just giving him more opportunities to play for us now and, if he keeps on with his consistent level of performance, I'm sure a call-up won't be too far around the corner."

Villa have claimed three points from their first two games of the new Premier League season.
