Wolverhampton Wanderers winger Adama Traore has reportedly emerged as a summer transfer target for Atletico Madrid.

Since the arrival of Julen Lopetegui in November, Traore has gradually improved after a mixed period under predecessor Bruno Lage.

The Spain international has played a part in all 13 of his compatriot's matches in charge, an indication of the faith which is currently being placed in him.

However, it has been well-documented that the 27-year-old's contract is due to expire at the end of the season, and he is yet to indicate any interest in a renewal.

Traore also acknowledged earlier in the season that he eventually wants to return to his homeland to play in La Liga after two spells with Barcelona.

Although Traore did not give a timeframe to fulfil that desire, the perception is that he will consider joining a Spanish team later this year.

According to 90min, Atletico have already instigated discussions with the player ahead of a potential switch as a free agent.

On the back of their early exit from Europe this campaign, Atletico had to reassess their approach in the transfer market to account for the absent revenue.

Coincidentally, that was solved by negotiating the sale of Matheus Cunha to Wolves for a fee which is said to be in the region of £43m.

The lack of continental distraction is currently helping Atletico in their bid to qualify for next season's Champions League, the club currently on a seven-match unbeaten streak in La Liga.

Nevertheless, Los Colchoneros are known to be scouring the market for free transfers with Leicester City defender Caglar Soyuncu in line to move to Wanda Metropolitano in the summer.

That appears to be Atletico's plan with regards to Traore, who could theoretically be deployed at wing-back or in the final third by Diego Simeone, providing that the Argentine remains in the dugout.

Traore has played only 12 fixtures in Spain's top flight during his career, contributing just two assists. body check tags ::
