Atletico Madrid are reportedly on the verge of signing Porto captain Hector Herrera on a free transfer.
The 29-year-old is thought to have agreed terms with the La Liga side in March but is now expected to formally sign a five-year deal with the club this week.
According to Diario AS, the Mexican midfielder has recently gained Portuguese citizenship, meaning that he will not need to use up one of the three non-EU spaces available in the Atletico squad.
Herrera had been with Porto for six seasons, winning the Primeira Liga title in 2017-18, making 245 appearances in all competitions and contributing 36 goals.
Atletico are undergoing a massive squad overhaul this summer and have already signed Herrera's Porto teammate Felipe Monteiro, as well as Monaco midfielder Gelson Martins and Marcos Llorente from capital rivals Real Madrid.
