Jonathan Tah, who is believed to be wanted by Barcelona, reveals that he will not be signing a new contract at Bayer Leverkusen.

Experienced centre-back Jonathan Tah has revealed that he will not be signing a new contract at Bayer Leverkusen and will therefore be leaving the Bundesliga champions in 2025.

There was a host of speculation surrounding the Germany international's future over the summer, with both Bayern Munich and Barcelona heavily linked with his services.

Barcelona are believed to have given serious consideration to moving for Tah in the latter stages of the transfer window, but the Catalan outfit's financial situation prevented them from being able to sign him.

The 28-year-old's contract is due to expire at the end of the 2024-25 campaign, though, and he has revealed that this will be his final season with Xabi Alonso's side.

"No, my decision remains unchanged. I will not renew my contract. My current deal runs until 2025, and I will give my all for Leverkusen until then," Tah told Suddeutsche Zeitung.

Tah confirms Leverkusen exit in 2025

"A football career is short, and I want to make the most of my opportunities. I believe it's time to explore new challenges, especially after such a successful season.

"I've been open and clear about my wishes. Once a player makes their intentions known, it's up to the clubs to work things out.

"Unfortunately, rumours and speculation can spiral out of control, and the player suffers in the process. We footballers are well-off, but it's difficult when you lose control of the situation."

When asked whether he would be joining Bayern next year, he responded: "That's a good question. We'll see. Right now, I'm focused on the season ahead with Leverkusen."

Will Barcelona move for Tah next year?

Players of Tah's ilk do not often become available on free transfers, and it would be a surprise if Barcelona were not in the mix for his signature in 2025.

Tah has been with Leverkusen since 2015, making 356 appearances in all competitions, including 48 outings during an excellent 2023-24 campaign for the club.

The German has already featured on four occasions for Alonso's side this term, captaining the team in their 3-2 loss to RB Leipzig last time out.

Barcelona are expected to move for a new centre-back next year, but they will not be in a position to spend a huge amount on a player in that area of the field. As a result, Tah could be the perfect addition for Hansi Flick's side.

An impressive start to the 2024-25 campaign has seen the Catalan giants win their opening four La Liga matches, which has left them top of the table, four points clear of second-placed Real Madrid. body check tags ::
