Barcelona president Joan Laporta has suggested that a decision on Sergio Busquets's future might not be made until the summer.
The 34-year-old's contract at Camp Nou is set to expire at the end of June, and there remains widespread speculation surrounding his next move.
Laporta has confirmed that Busquets "has proposals from the United States", and the former Spain captain is given serious consideration to moving to the MLS.
The Barcelona president said that discussions over a potential new deal will take place "in the summer".
"He is our captain and we are delighted with him at all levels. On the day of the match against Real Betis he will have played 700 games, he told me this morning," Laporta told Que T'hi Jugues.
"He has proposals from the United States and I know he was thinking about it, but in principle he will continue with us until the end of the season. We'll talk in the summer, but I think he's still got time."
Barcelona boss Xavi recently called the midfielder a "fundamental" player when asked about his contract situation at Camp Nou.
"He has a contract until June and then we will see. It's more a personal feeling of his. How he sees himself in the team, for me, he is fundamental," Xavi told reporters.
"It will depend on him, more than on the club and me, but we will try to convince him.
"Busquets still has six months left on his contract. We are focused on what happens this season and we have a lot at stake. We can't make plans. I haven't spoken to Busquets yet about continuing."
The midfielder has again been a vital player for the Catalan giants this season, making 18 appearances in all competitions, with 13 of those outings coming in La Liga.
Wolverhampton Wanderers midfielder Ruben Neves has been linked with a switch to Barcelona as a possible replacement for Busquets.
Laporta branded Neves "a great player" when asked about the Portugal international but refused to confirm whether the 25-year-old was a transfer target.
"Neves is a great player, but this is part of private conversations. Busquets will not last forever and there are internal discussions to find a replacement for him," Laporta added.
"Frenkie de Jong can play in this position, but it won't be enough with just one player. This will be decided by Xavi."
Neves, who has also been linked with Arsenal and Manchester United, has entered the final 18 months of his contract at Molineux. body check tags ::
