Barcelona boss Xavi has said that Sergio Busquets has still not decided whether he will be signing a new contract with the Catalan giants.

The experienced midfielder's current deal at Camp Nou is due to expire at the end of June, and he continues to be strongly linked with a switch to the MLS.

Busquets remains a vital player for Barcelona, making 26 appearances in all competitions this season, and the club are determined to keep hold of him for at least another season.

Xavi was asked about the 34-year-old during Saturday's press conference ahead of the contest with Sevilla on Sunday night.

The head coach said that it will ultimately be up to the experienced midfielder to decide whether he wants to continue his time at the club or seek pastures new.

"In the end, we all work together and the decision is his. We are waiting to see what he decides. He is a very important person inside and outside, he is the captain," Xavi told reporters.

"He is part of everything and he has earned the right to decide his future. If he can continue, I'd be delighted."

Busquets made his first-team debut for Barcelona in 2008, and he has featured on 706 occasions for the club in all competitions, contributing 18 goals and 42 assists.

The midfielder has played the full 90 minutes in his side's last three league games against Getafe, Girona and Real Betis, meanwhile, and he is also expected to start against Sevilla on Sunday.

Barcelona will be aiming to make it nine straight wins in all competitions when they welcome Sevilla to Camp Nou.

"We have a tough opponent despite their ranking. [Jorge] Sampaoli has brought back a strong and competitive Sevilla. They work very well defensively and do some very good things in high pressing," Xavi told reporters.

"They will be a strong and tough opponent who can make things difficult for us. They are a team that has players with a lot of experience. Tomorrow will be another test and we have to pass it with the three points.

"I remember the best period in Barça's history when I was involved, and we didn't always play excellently and had brilliant games. In football, there are times when you are better and times when you are not so good.

"We're in a good moment, five points clear of Madrid, young people are taking the initiative, we've just won a title, but we need to keep it going."

Xavi also discussed the future of Ansu Fati during his press conference. body check tags ::
