Xavi wants Barcelona to re-sign Lionel Messi?

Head coach Xavi reportedly asks Barcelona to try to re-sign club legend Lionel Messi from Paris Saint-Germain next summer.

Xavi is reportedly keen for Barcelona to try to re-sign Paris Saint-Germain forward Lionel Messi during the 2023 summer transfer window.

Joan Laporta has been relentlessly looking to strengthen Xavi's first-team squad ahead of the upcoming campaign, the club president generally being successful with his efforts.

Andreas Christensen, Franck Kessie, Raphinha and Robert Lewandowski have all moved to Camp Nou, and the Catalan giants are seemingly confident about beating Chelsea in the race to secure the services of Sevilla defender Jules Kounde.

However, according to Sport, Xavi is already looking a year into the future when it comes to making adjustments to his squad.

The report claims that Xavi has already brought up the idea of Barcelona making every effort to try to re-sign Messi ahead of 2023-24.

In 2021, Barcelona were in a position where they were forced to part ways with their best-ever player against his wishes courtesy of a need to improve their financial position.

Although that currently remains the case, Laporta has been selling percentages of the club's future television revenue in order to generate much-needed transfer funds.

With Barcelona being blessed with an array of youngsters who will seemingly remain at the club for years to come, it is plausible that Xavi may prioritise a reunion with one of his former teammates, despite his age.

The legendary Argentine would have just turned 36 if he returns to Catalonia at the end of his two-year contract with PSG.

While Messi contributed 11 goals and 15 assists during his 34 appearances for the French giants during the last campaign, the season could not be regardless as an overwhelming success.

Just six strikes came during PSG's Ligue-1-winning campaign, while the club capitulated to Real Madrid in the last 16 of the Champions League.

As it stands, Messi has less than 12 months remaining on his contract with PSG officials said to be keen to extend his terms through to 2024.

However, it has been previously claimed that Messi and his representatives have little intention of entertaining discussions until after the World Cup, which takes place at the end of this year.

Messi, who contributed an astonishing 670 goals and 302 assists during his time at Barcelona, is also likely to have offers on the table from the MLS. body check tags ::
