Sports Mole

Barnsley take on Wycombe Wanderers on Wednesday evening with the opportunity to strengthen their position in the Championship playoffs.

While Wycombe remain nine points adrift of safety, Saturday's victory over Preston North End has boosted the home side's hopes of an unlikely survival in the second tier.

Match preview

As they went 2-1 down at promotion rivals Bournemouth, there was a real possibility that Barnsley would go two matches without success for the first time since the end of January.

However, the Tykes rallied back to claim a 3-2 triumph at the Vitality Stadium, earning a result which extended their lead over the Cherries to five points.

While there are still 10 games remaining, it was a statement result for Valerien Ismael, whose side sit in second spot in the form table since his arrival in October.

Eight wins and one draw have come from their last nine matches, their only stalemate being recorded at home to Derby County last week.

Carlton Morris scored the decisive goal against Bournemouth at the weekend, taking his tally to five strikes from just 556 minutes of action since his January arrival.

Although Barnsley are the clear favourites to win this contest, Wycombe will feel rejuvenated after their much-needed 1-0 success over Preston.

The result ended a four-match streak without a point or goal, and there is now an opportunity to move off the bottom of the table on Wednesday night.

Despite the Chairboys needing to rely on a Sheffield Wednesday defeat, such a scenario presenting itself is a step in the right direction after the negativity of recent weeks.

Gareth Ainsworth will recognise the size of the task still ahead of his team, but three more points on Wednesday night will increase the pressure on a faltering Birmingham City.

Team News

The extra day of recovery may encourage Ainsworth to make minimal changes to the side which got the better of Preston.

Wycombe winger Fred Onyedinma could return to the side, taking the place of Daryl Horgan on the left flank.

Callum Styles, Daryl Dike and Morris are all in line for recalls to the Barnsley XI.

Michael Sollbauer may also take the spot of Toby Sibbick in defence.

Wycombe Wanderers possible starting lineup:
Stockdale; McCarthy, Tafazolli, Knight, Jacobson; Thompson, Mehmeti, Gape; McCleary, Ikpeazu, Onyedinma

Barnsley possible starting lineup:
Collins; Andersen, Helik, Sollbauer; Brittain, Palmer, Mowatt, Styles; Woodrow, Dike, Morris

We say: Wycombe Wanderers 1-2 Barnsley

On a high after their triumph at the weekend, we expect Wycombe to produce another committed performance against the Tykes. Nevertheless, it is difficult to pick any faults with the visitors right now, leading us to predict a narrow success for the Yorkshire side.
