Crewe Alexandra boss Steve Davis: 'Barnsley defeat a wake-up call'

Steve Davis says that Crewe's 2-0 defeat at Barnsley should serve as a "wake-up call" to his team.

Crewe Alexandra boss Steve Davis bemoaned the lack of quality on show as his side lost 2-0 to Barnsley, but claims that the result should be a "wake-up call" to his team.

The Railwaymen, who have moved out of the bottom four with a recent string of victories, were unable to replicate that form as Lewin Nyatanga's header and an own goal from debutant keeper Paul Rachubka sealed a miserable afternoon for Alex.

Indeed, Davis believes that Crewe never got going at Oakwell, telling the club's official website: "As a spectacle it was poor and I include both teams in that. I am not being disrespectful to Barnsley either, but there was not a lot of quality on show this afternoon.

"I said to the players at half time that this game is crying out for someone to grab it by the scruff of the neck and show some real quality, but we couldn't find anyone. It didn't happen for whatever reason.

"This should be a wake-up call to all of those today because I've been saying that we have a lot of work to do. The easier part is getting out of the bottom four, the hard part is to keep winning games, picking up points and remaining out of it."

Crewe are currently 20th in the League One table, five points above the relegation zone.
