Barnsley pick up a 1-1 draw with Sheffield Wednesday in their first Championship match following Paul Heckingbottom's exit.

Barnsley recorded a 1-1 draw with Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday afternoon in their first Championship game since Paul Heckingbottom walked away from the club.

The Tykes were rocked when their manager joined Leeds United just four days after agreeing a new contract at Oakwell.

Under the guidance of caretaker boss Paul Harsley, Barnsley managed to come from behind against Sheffield Wednesday to nab a point.

Oliver McBurnie was the man to get the goal, just three minutes after Atdhe Nuhui found the back of the net from the penalty spot for the Owls.

The match itself was full of pace, and it was the hosts who drew first blood after Lucas Joao fouled right-back Andy Yiadom in the box, causing referee Lee Probert to point to the spot.

Nuhiu sent the ball down the middle with ease, but the Owls could not celebrate for long as McBurnie stormed down the other end, flying past a handful of defenders to slot the ball into the bottom corner.

Tom Bradshaw came close to giving Barnsley the lead in the first half when Lloyd Isgrove delivered a perfectly-weighted cross in for his teammate, but Joe Wildsmith made a crucial stop.

The home side created numerous chances in the second half, but none were taken, as McBurnie and Yiadom saw efforts fly over the crossbar.

The referee waved away a penalty claim from the Tykes, despite Venancio appearing to bring down Adam Hammill in the danger area.

Barnsley continued to press, but to no avail as they settled for a point, leaving the club just one place above relegation with a two-point advantage.
