Celtic will be looking to overturn their 2-1 deficit in the Champions League away from home at the Allianz Arena on Tuesday when they face Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich.

The Bavarians finished 12th in the Champions League table with 15 points from eight games, and their failure to qualify for the round of 16 means they were placed into a playoff tie against the Scottish champions.

The Hoops were arguably the better team in the first leg despite their 2-1 defeat and looked particularly threatening during counter-attacks.

Ahead of Tuesday's contest, Sports Mole takes an in-depth look at the head-to-head record and previous meetings between the two sides.

Head-to-head record

Previous meetings: 5
Bayern wins: 4
Draws: 1
Celtic wins: 0

Bayern Munich and Celtic have only clashed five times in their history, but the Bundesliga club have certainly managed to get the better of the Scottish Premiership side in their rare meetings, with Bayern undefeated in their five matchups while emerging as victors four times.

The Bavarians most recently got the better of Celtic in their Champions League first-leg clash on February 12, 2025 thanks to goals from Harry Kane and Michael Olise, which gave them a 2-0 advantage by the 49th minute.

Daizen Maeda managed to pull one back for the Bhoys to ensure that the Bavarians only took home a 2-1 lead into the second leg, but much could have been different had Nicolas-Gerrit Kuhn's first-minute goal not been ruled out.

Celtic's solitary draw with Bayern came in a 0-0 stalemate at Celtic Park in the Champions League in November 2003, with the likes of Chris Sutton and Henrik Larsson featuring for the Hoops.

However, that match would be the clubs' last meeting for nearly 14 years, with the sides next clashing twice in the group stage of the 2017-18 Champions League in October 2017.

The Scottish team will not have fond memories of that European campaign considering they were beaten 3-0 at Allianz Arena on October 18 and lost 2-1 at home on October 31.

Familiar faces Thomas Muller and Joshua Kimmich scored for the Bavarians in their 3-0 victory, while Kingsley Coman found his way onto the scoresheet when his side triumphed in late October.

To their credit, Celtic have ensured that three of their four defeats against the German club have been closely fought contests, with the Bundesliga side winning 2-1 three times.
