Compared to some South American rivalries involving Brazil, against the likes of Argentina, Chile and Uruguay, this is a more modern matchup, with just 38 previous meetings, the first of which came in 1945, three decades after the first edition of the Copa America.

Despite the high stature of both in South American football, there has actually been very few notable meetings between the two at the business end of major tournaments in particular.

The first four meetings between the nations all came in the Copa America, and with Colombia still in their footballing infancy, Brazil were dominant, winning each clash, scoring 22 goals in the process.

The majority of their meetings now come in qualifying, having met just twice in the knockout stage of major tournaments, but their clash in the quarter-finals of the World Cup in 2014 remains one of the most memorable recent knockout stage clashes in the competition.

It was James Rodriguez's tournament, finishing as top scorer and scoring in that quarter-final, but he was outshone by David Luiz's thunderous free kick that was pivotal in Brazil coming out 2-1 winners after Thiago Silva's opener.

The other knockout clash came when both were invitees to CONCACAF's Gold Cup in 2003 and Kaka netted twice in a 2-0 win for the Selecao that saw them advance to the semi-finals of a competition where they were losing finalists to Mexico.

That sort of dominance by Brazil has never dissipated in this fixture, as they have never been beaten on home soil in 15 meetings by Los Cafeteros, and they have suffered just three competitive defeats, but one of those did come in November 2023, when Luis Diaz scored twice in a come-from-behind victory for Nestor Lorenzo's men.
