Brentford midfielder Josh Dasilva will undergo surgery on a "significant" knee injury.

The former England Under-21 international returned to action last month after spending over four months out with a hamstring injury that he picked up against Fulham in August.

Dasilva started consecutive FA Cup matches against Wolverhampton Wanderers, before he featured as a substitute in Premier League games against Nottingham Forest and Tottenham Hotspur.

However, Dasilva was left out of the matchday squad for Monday's 3-1 defeat to Manchester City at the Gtech Community Stadium.

The Bees have now revealed that the 25-year-old will require an operation after damaging the ligaments in his right knee.

Brentford head of medical, Neil Greig, told the club's website: "Unfortunately, Josh suffered an injury in training over the weekend, while preparing for the Man City game.

"Subsequent imaging has shown a significant injury to ligaments in his right knee, which will require surgery to repair.

"Having consulted with the leading knee surgeon in the UK, Josh will now undertake a short period of preparation before surgery goes ahead and, at this point, no firm timescales have been discussed for his recovery.

"Josh will, of course, receive all of the support that he needs over the coming weeks. He's previously shown an outstanding attitude to adversity and injury recovery, and we have absolute confidence in his capability to fully recover from this setback."

Dasilva's injury setback will come as a blow to Brentford boss Thomas Frank, who is already having to contend with a number of absentees.

Rico Henry will miss the remainder of the season, while Aaron Hickey, Kevin Schade and Bryan Mbeumo are all still working their way back from their respective injury issues.

Brentford are currently fighting to retain their Premier League status, with the Bees sitting just three points above the drop zone in 15th place.

After losing their last two matches, the West London club will try to return to winning ways when they face Wolves yet again on Saturday. body check tags ::
