Brighton and Hove Albion beat Bristol City 2-0 at the Amex Stadium to move into the top half of the Championship table this afternoon.

Goals either side of half time from Inigo Calderon and Will Buckley gave Gus Poyet's men a comfortable win in the end.

It was the visitors who started the better however, with City's Marvin Elliot having the first chance of the game after just seven minutes, but the Jamaican couldn't direct his effort on target.

Craig Mackail-Smith led the line once more for Brighton, and the striker had a decent penalty claim turned down midway through the first half after tangling with Lewin Nyatanga.

The coming together forced Mackail-Smith off the pitch, and he was replaced by former Bristol Rovers player Will Hoskins.

Alan Navarro replaced Jake Forster-Caskey minutes later as Brighton were forced into another change, and it was the sub who had the next chance, blazing his shot over from inside the penalty area.

The match needed something to spark it into life, and it came from the hosts' skipper Calderon, his 30-yard curling effort breaking the deadlock after 37 minutes.

This seemed to galvanise Brighton and they went close twice more before half time, with both Matthew Sparrow and Ashley Barnes testing James in quick succession.

The second half was a lot quieter, with neither team creating a clear-cut chance until Buckley doubled the home side's lead, rounding David James before passing the ball into an empty net.

Brighton's second goal all but killed the game off, with neither team creating chances in the latter stages.
