We must be more ruthless, warns Burnley boss Dyche

Burnley scored four goals against Bournemouth at the weekend but were not as clinical at the Pirelli Stadium.

Sean Dyche feels a lack of cutting edge in front of goal is blighting Burnley’s season.

The Clarets boss, who has seen his team win only once in 13 matches in all competitions this campaign, was left to rue several missed chances as Burnley were beaten by League One Burton in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday night.

Kevin Long headed the Premier League strugglers in front just before half-time, but Liam Boyce equalised and then set up the winning goal for Jamie Allen, at a time when Burnley were piling on the pressure.

Dyche said: “We are missing that clinical edge, but that is so, so valuable in football.

“We’ve said it all season and it’s been my biggest bug-bear of the season. We can’t put our finger on it, but I don’t want to by hyper-critical because we’ve probably taken four out of eight really good chances last Saturday (in the 4-0 win at home to Bournemouth).

“We had control of the game (against Burton), but if you don’t take chances the opposition will at some stage and that’s what has happened.

“What we have to do is stay calm, stay resolute and keep making chances.”

Burton boss Nigel Clough is looking for a money-spinning tie after guiding Albion to the fourth round of the competition for the first time in the club’s history.

“We talk about the three things we want from the cup – glory, confidence and money. We got the glory against Burnley, we certainly got some confidence and hopefully we might now get all three in the next round,” said Clough.

“We’d like a big club at home or away. Revenue will be as important as anything in the next round.

“If the draw is kind we can earn some revenue and just the feeling it gives everyone beating a Premier League side is great as it has only happened once before in Burton Albion’s history.”
