The Football Association has charged Burton Albion defender Kyle McFadzean with violent conduct.
During Saturday's fixture with Wolverhampton Wanderers, McFadzean appeared to elbow Paul Gladon but the offence was missed by all three officials.
After assessing video footage of the incident, the FA has decided to enforce a three-match suspension against the 29-year-old, despite his club appealing that the length of ban would be excessive.
McFadzean will miss matches against Fulham, Brighton & Hove Albion and Norwich City.
