Chelsea caretaker manager Frank Lampard reveals that defender Marc Cucurella is sidelined with a quad injury.

Chelsea interim boss Frank Lampard has confirmed that Marc Cucurella has been sidelined with an injury issue.

Cucurella started the second leg of Chelsea's Champions League quarter-final against Real Madrid due to Ben Chilwell's suspension.

However, the Spain international did not feature in the matchday squad for Wednesday's Premier League meeting with Brentford at Stamford Bridge.

Lampard revealed prior to the game that Cucurella had been left out due to injury rather than a selection decision.

In Cucurella's absence, Chelsea lost 2-0 to Brentford following a Cesar Azpilicueta own goal and a Bryan Mbuemo effort.

Speaking after the disappointing defeat, the Chelsea manager provided further details on the extent of Cucurela's injury.

"Cucurella is injured. He injured himself in training two days ago," Lampard told reporters. "He will be out for a few weeks with a quad injury."

News of Cucurella's injury will come as a blow to the West London club, who have already lost Reece James and Mason Mount for the rest of the season.

James will miss the remainder of the 2022-23 campaign after picking up a hamstring injury in the second leg against Real Madrid.

Mount has been struggling with a persistent pelvic injury over the last two months, and he has undergone surgery to solve the issue.

Lampard is also unable to call upon the services of Kalidou Koulibaly and Kai Havertz, who are ruled out with hamstring and knee problems.

Having lost all five games since returning to the Chelsea dugout, Lampard will be hoping to guide his team to victory when they face Arsenal on Tuesday.

The Blues are currently sitting in 11th position in the Premier League table after picking 39 points from 32 matches. body check tags ::
