Cesar Azpilicueta: 'Poor start surprised us'

Chelsea defender Cesar Azpilicueta admits that the club's players have been as surprised as anyone by the poor start to the season.

Chelsea defender Cesar Azpilicueta has admitted that his side's poor start to the season has surprised the players as much as anyone, but is adamant that the club will turn things around.

Jose Mourinho's side have suffered their worst start to a domestic season in three decades but outclassed Maccabi Tel Aviv to win their Champions League group opener 4-0 on Wednesday night.

The Spanish full-back said that he had forgotten what it felt like to win a game after the Blues secured just one win from their first five Premier League games, but insisted that the club can turn the corner.

"We want to change things as quickly as possible and it is true that we haven not had the start that everyone expected," he told The Guardian. "None of us are happy with the situation but we know that we can put it right.

"We are as surprised as anyone, but we are convinced that with the work we are doing we will turn things around. We all know we need to improve, to get back to last season's Chelsea and there is belief that we can do that.

"I had forgotten that [winning] feeling. I can imagine what it would have been like going into training the next day if we had lost [against Maccabi]. We have had a bad start and we have a tough job ahead to turn things around but it is in our hands."

Chelsea have the chance to get their league campaign back on track when they face Arsenal at Stamford Bridge in Saturday's early kickoff.
