Jose Mourinho: 'Eden Hazard still not reaching his potential'

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho believes that Eden Hazard will only get better after the Belgian winger's award-winning displays last season.

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has insisted that Eden Hazard can still improve this season, despite winning the PFA Player of the Year award and helping the Blues to the Premier League title last year.

The Belgian winger scored 19 goals in all competitions last season and was also named the Football Writers' Association's player of the year.

Mourinho revealed that he was less than impressed with Hazard when he first saw him play, but that he has been delighted with the player's progress since the Portuguese manager rejoined the club in 2013.

"If I compare my first match with him with my last match with him, he is amazing. Because my first match with him was a friendly match in Malaysia, two years ago, where I was so disappointed with his light attitude," he told Sport.

"The last one was in Australia [this summer], after a crazy season, after a 24-hour flight – and he was man of the match. If I compare the levels of ambition, professionalism, respect, believing in himself, the status he wants to be, I see a huge difference.

"Now he's fantastic, but he's 24 so [there is] a lot more to come from him. He's getting better and better."

Chelsea begin the defence of their Premier League title with a home tie against Swansea City tomorrow.
