Graham Poll blasts Football Association for "lack of credibility" after Fernando Torres ruling

Former Premier League referee Graham Poll criticises the FA for not punishing Chelsea striker Fernando Torres's eye-gouge on Tottenham Hotspur defender Jan Vertonghen.

Former referee Graham Poll has criticised the Football Association's decision not to punish Fernando Torres for his gouge on Tottenham Hotspur's Jan Vertonghen on Saturday.

The Chelsea forward escaped retrospective action after he clawed at the Belgium international's face during their 1-1 draw on Saturday.

Poll feels that FA have once again got a key decision wrong, and criticised the governing body for their "lack of credibility".

"In taking no action against Fernando Torres after his gouge and scratch on Tottenham Hotspur's Jan Vertonghen, the FA have once again shown a complete lack of credibility," Poll told the Daily Mail.

"Luis Suarez got a 10-match ban [for biting]. Torres escaped without a scratch. Football's ruling body is in desperate need of an injection of credibility.

"Torres appeared to deliberately grab the Spurs defender's face, sank his fingers into his flesh and dragged his nails across his cheek — all in front of an incredulous TV audience. We are asking an all-too-familiar question: is this body fit to rule over our national game?"

Torres was eventually sent off for a separate incident involving Vertonghen, after the Spain international appeared to elbow his opponent. However, replays showed that there was no contact between the players.
