Graham Potter expecting "awkward conversations" with Chelsea squad

Head coach Graham Potter admits that he faces a few "awkward conversations" with members of his Chelsea squad on the back of the club's relentless transfer activity.

Head coach Graham Potter has acknowledged that it will not be easy to establish an ideal environment within his Chelsea squad.

In the second transfer window under new ownership, the Blues hierarchy were relentless when it came to purchasing players, seven of the eight additions in line to feature in the first-team squad for the remainder of the season.

Just one senior player - Jorginho - has left Stamford Bridge, creating a situation where in excess of 30 players will be present in the first-team group when everyone is fit, not including long-term absentee Armando Broja.

The selection picture is further complicated by Chelsea only being able to make three alterations to their squad for the Champions League, meaning that several big-money signings will miss out.

Ahead of Friday's Premier League fixture against Fulham, attention was naturally placed on Potter's dilemmas when it comes to keeping each of his squad happy at his pre-match press conference.

When quizzed on his thoughts on the situation, the Englishman acknowledged that he will have to use his experience to help deal with the scenario in front of him.

Speaking to reporters, Potter said: "I'm not complaining about it. It's exciting but a test for me and the staff. We have a lot of good players and we have to create an environment where there is healthy competition, where they can push each other, but at the same time, understand that there is going to be frustration at times.

"Only eleven can play, that is how it is, but we have got a lot of important games, and it's about being ready and supporting the team."

In response to questions about the Champions League decisions, he added: "We've got a bit of time to make the decision but we're aware of who we need to speak to.

"There will be a few awkward conversations because only eleven can play. You have to be as honest as you can and respect the fact players want to play and compete, but they have to be patient and help the team."

Chelsea have spent at least £29m on each of Noni Madueke, Benoit Badiashile, Enzo Fernandez and Mykhaylo Mudryk, while Joao Felix has arrived on loan from Atletico Madrid.

Nevertheless, two of those players will miss out, with it being assumed that Andrey Santos and David Datro Fofana will not come into the conversation.

Chelsea must also ensure that eight homegrown and domestic-based players are included, the West Londoners already being at that figure. body check tags ::
