Sunderland boss Gus Poyet says he is hoping that the 2-1 win over Chelsea can be the launchpad for his team to build momentum necessary to retain their Premier League status this season.

Sunderland boss Gus Poyet is hoping that his team's 2-1 win over Chelsea in the Capital One Cup can inspire his team to surviving relegation in the Premier League this season.

Fabio Borini hit an 89th-minute equaliser to cancel out an earlier Lee Cattermole own goal, before Ki Sung-Yueng struck in the dying stages to seal the Black Cats' progression to the semi final of the League Cup.

In contrast, Poyet's men have endured an indifferent league campaign thus far, with the North-East outfit sitting rooted to the foot England's top flight having amassed just nine points.

However, the former Brighton & Hove Albion manager is hopeful that the victory over Jose Mourinho's men can act as the foundations upon which survival can be built.

Asked whether the triumph over the Blues can be the turning point, Poyet told Sky Sports News: "I hope so. That was the idea we want, to maintain that consistency.

"They played fantastic, they didn't stop. They gave everything today and I hope they have turned the corner."

Sunderland host Norwich City in the Premier League on Saturday.
